October 2021
Designflows is a mobile UI design competition organised by Bending Spoons. This year (2021) the competition has been extended to all European designers.
The challenge lasts 48 hours: At 19:00 CET on 8 October 2021, each participant received by email a link to a creative brief with mobile UI design specifications.
The deadline for submission was 10 am CET on 11 October 2021.
For more information, see the contest website.
The brief called for the design of an app called Homely.
Homely is an app for people who need to do some simple Do It Yourself (DIY) tasks.
Homely has a target customer base of amateurs: regular people who sometimes need to access tools for a specific, fairly straightforward DIY task, such as assembling a cabinet, putting up a shelf, or repotting a plant.
For this customer base, buying the tools outright seems unnecessary. Renting the tools, on the other hand, is cheaper, less wasteful, and saves space in their home.
The main feature of Homely is the Toolkit Rental option. These pre-composed toolkits include everything the user needs for the task. Toolkits are stored in lockers located around the city and inside big homeware stores.
I chose to take part in this challenge to test my UI design skills, which I usually put on the back burner.
Creating a concept from scratch in just two days is a real challenge: you have to find a coherent idea and style, and condense the required information into just three screens and an app icon. There is no time for doubt.
Unfortunately, my project was not selected, but I hope with all my heart to participate in the next edition!
